The Jungle

I'm currently reading 'The Jungle' by Upton Sinclair. It is a story that documents the Chicago stockyards around the turn of the nineteenth century by following the life of a Lithuanian immigrant named Jurgis Rudkus and his extended family. He has been fed the standard American dream spiel and is working hard to obtain what he sees as a perfect life, but is slowly starting to realize that some people are willing to do whatever it takes to succeed regardless of the ill effects it may have on others.

I'm only about a quarter of the way through it as I haven't had much time lately to sit down and enjoy a book, but so far I am really enjoying it. If any of you have some spare time and are looking to pick up a solid read, this one has my recommendation.

While I haven't read anything more than excerpts of his works I do find his life story and political stance for reform interesting.
I can't tell ya the last time I've actually read a book from start to finish in any sort of timely manner...sad, I know. I'm not sure I'd choose this particular Sinclair work as my first choice though. The depictions I envision seem pretty graphic....lol
Thanks for the recommendation....this is definitely more my type of blogging. :o)
