“If You Don’t Know Me By Now” – A Note From Martina

I am SO EXCITED to FINALLY be able to share the info with you on my new album! It comes out March 4th. It was produced by Don Was. It’s called Everlasting. And it’s a record of classic soul and R&B songs. I love soulful music and it just made sense to me to stretch a bit at this time and do something that fills my heart and allows me to explore a little bit. I have worked hard to choose some of the best and most loved classics, much like I did with Timeless, and record them in a way that is faithful to the original, but still has my own artistic spin on it. Basically it’s an album of songs with beautiful, timeless melodies and heartfelt lyrics. It’s a romantic album. It’s a fun album. It has familiar songs as well as some songs you may be hearing for the first time.

Working with Don was a dream come true as he has produced some of my favorite artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, and The Rolling Stones. He is so musical and really helped me hone in on how to do these songs in a way that not only features the vocals, but also connects this music with what I’ve done in the past in a really honest, organic way. We cut with a very small band, all in the same room….just keyboards, bass, drums, and guitar, and added a 5 piece horn section and background vocals. Wait til you hear these horns!!!! I can’ wait to tour with this band in the spring!

While this is a departure, song-wise for me, soul, R&B, and country have a lot in common in the fact that they are songs about the human condition and heart. Some of the songs we covered were actually country hits as well as R&B hits. Much like Ray Charles’ Modern Sounds In Country and Western Music, this album goes back to a time when all music formats could be heard side by side. It’s not bound by genre or age. There are no rules! It’s music for everyone.

I can’t wait to go on this new journey with you. Putting out new music is one of the most exciting things we can do as performers. Stay tuned for a complete track listing in the upcoming weeks.

  1. Martina can sing any song and make it her own. Martina’s voice is so lyrical and unique, yet so distinctively, BEAUTIFUL!!!

  2. I can’t wait to hear the whole label. This is my kind of music!!! This is going to be fun in concert. You are doing the right thing singing right from your heart.

  3. Whoa! Yes, we are all entitled to our opinion, and want to show respect for that! However, asap., think I need to open a thread about this in the forums.

  4. I do think of a truly great songs as classics and not genre specific. Not that this affects me per se, I am a huge fan of rhythm and blues, soul and jazz, and esp. blues music. The relation to the genres with great music is much closer than most realize.

I got goosebumps listening to this classic with M’s cover. Such a great song and think Martina covered it to perfection. I think that she very respectfully and very subtly updated it, perhaps with what a female can best bring to it, with more emotion. I vividly recall when this song was new with Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes. By all means think that they deserve high acclaim for the original, it is indeed a classic! However, Martina is not doing the harmony work made famous by them and many of Motown’s artists, such as Temptations, etc. Gotta give her EXTRA credit for nailing this song without the benefit of the the harmony work it is known for!

Martina’s did such a fantastic job with this song! We all know what a powerhouse voice and range she has with songs such as Broken Wing, Anyway, etc. I am pleasantly reminded that you can generate just as much affect with a song that does not have you utilizing your powerhouse gifts. There is this awesome flow of words and her projecting of their meaning that blew me away!

    Thank you Martina!

  5. I dunno how anybody can give “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” a listen and NOT BE ECSTATIC! Those vocals are *^%$*&^** INCREDIBLE!!! UN-REAL! the production pretty much seems perfect too- Don Was was a great choice!!! (Or would that be Don Was to the 2nd power??) Anyhoo- if ya follow Martina on Twitter, u shld be aware of her eclectic taste in music…she likes & listens to many genres of tunes- THIS CD is gonna KICK some SERIOUS ARSE! Personally, I think she FINALLY gonna snag that Grammy!!! I also think the entire music world gonna say, “UMMMM, we always knew she had a superior voice, but we DIN’T know she could sing like this!!!” (Dontcha jus LOVE how I make up quotes? ) Yeah, I am STOKED! so stoked….

  6. I don’t love martina because she sings “country. ” I dont like when people try to label music and put it into specific categories/genres.. Music is Music…you either like a song or you don’t. I love that Martina can sing anything…a lot of artists can’t. She is a real singer andI just think she is the best vocalist PERIOD- also…she is one of the NICEST and sincere artists you’ll ever come across. I LOVE this kind of music.. I listen to all genres across the board and I’m quite excited about this album. ….AND I’m really excited for it to go on Vinyl.. I can hear it spinning on my record player right meow.

90% of the shows I go to…artists cover someone else’s songs.. why? because they are fans of the music too. Beyonce does it, Taylor Swift does it, Carrie Underwood does it…Luke Bryan does it.. etc etc etc. and I LOVE IT when they do it. Its FUN!

I’m excited for the new adventure and the start of the new label. I love the ambition of the McBrides….they are always changing and constantly growing. They help others learn as well. Who else do you know does that?

I know I’m a FAn of Martina.. and whatever she does.. I’ll support it :)

  7. Growth-change-congrats!! Can’t wait!!
To the concerned parties, Martina loves country, that is why she paid homage with Timeless.
Artists are creative individual and every once in awhile, they need to change things up a bit to stay fresh.
She’ll come be back to her country roots I reckon and she will come back fresh, better than ever.
It takes courage to step out of one’s comfort zone.
Her voice is bound to reach many who somehow aren’t familiar with her work.
Good luck Martina. Continue to grow. We’ll always love ya!

Ok, all of you that seem to be uneasy about her shift out of the “country” genre for this album need to be a little open minded. Come on guys, just think about all the reasons that you love Martina. You love her because of her music and your love of country, yes we know. We all do. But you also love her because of her voice that can do something others can’t. She can sing absolutely anything she pleases and make it sound phenomenal. I say we should all give her the support that she rightfully earned and deserves.

  9. I LOVE it! I have this song on my IPOD by at least 4 different people. I love this song. Hearing it from a womans side is different. Can’t wait to see what the other tracks are. Great to have you back :) Cindy

  10. Sounds like a great concept! Can’t wait till March. Any thought on the size of venues for the associated tour yet?

  11. I have all Martina’s albums and have followed her career since the outset despite the demise of CMT from UK television some 15 years ago. It seems ages since the last album and I was looking forward to some new songs, not covers, especially of R&B songs. I’ll reserve judgement until I see the track listing but fear I’ll be giving this one a miss.

  12. Congratulations on the launch of your new label! I’m really looking forward to the release of this album! I love what you’ve shared so far…I can’t wait to find out the complete the track listing! :)

  13. I guess Martina is done with country music and recording her own songs. I give up! First we get Timeless which was all cover songs then we get a new album then we get a Christmas album of cover songs and now we get an R @ B album of cover songs? What the heck is going on? Have we lost Martina forever?

  14. No question in my mind how wonderful this will be!!!

  15. i love it

  16. I am a little disappointed but will still purchase. Sorry, was expecting new songs and not crazy about R @B and not country.

  17. Really, we have to wait until March 4. Excited and impatient. I’m sure it will be worth the wait. ♡

  18. Great to hear about the new album, and love the featured track. Will you be headlining a tour in UK to promote the album ? Been too long since the O2 a few years back. Russell

  19. I love this idea for your new cd! Can’t wait to hear your voice on some classic songs!
