MARTINA MCBRIDE PERFORMS WITH BLIND TEENAGER

Martina McBride helped one lucky fan experience a dream come true last weekend in Alabama. During a tour stop at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center on Saturday, June 14th, McBride surprised 16-year-old blind singer Madie Hendrix with an invitation to join her onstage during soundcheck. The pair performed an impromptu duet of Martina’s 2006 hit, “Anyway.”

The invite was McBride’s way of thanking Hendrix for participating in the award-winning vocalist’s Team Martina charity.

“At first I was like, ‘No, she’s talking about somebody else,'” recalls Hendrix. “There’s another Madie in hereā€¦ I don’t know.”

But the honor was indeed reserved for the young woman who, along with 44 fan volunteers from 22 states, helped Team Martina raise $33,000 for girls seeking shelter at Covenant House in Guatemala.

“I really tried to do whatever I could to get as much money as I could raised,” says Hendrix. “I’m very proud to have raised $2,000, which is just a small part of that.”

The funds raised by Team Martina members will help provide musical instruments for the residents at Covenant House, which Martina says can offer a life-changing experience.

“Music is what kept me going,” the “Independence Day” singer explains. “I know that it can make such a difference. We’re going to make a difference with this. It feels really good.”

Covenant House Casa Alianza, a home for trafficked and abused girls in Guatemala, was founded by the Beatles’ George Harrison. Team Martina is a global charity dedicated to helping improve the lives of children through music and music education.

Martina’s Everlasting, on which she covers soul and R&B classics, is out now, and she continues to tour with material from the new album.
