Concert review: Martina McBride earns major country-star status Saturday at Xcel in St. Paul

When country music chanteuse Martina McBride went retro four years ago, releasing a collection of covers of songs that first emanated from rural radios in the 1950s and '60s, it seemed a bold new direction for her, as well as an unassailable bow to her influences.
But at St. Paul's Xcel Center on Saturday night, McBride made it clear that she's completely current on what's selling out of Nashville these days. Headlining a double bill with honky-tonker Trace Adkins, McBride spent the second night of her tour demonstrating that she still has one of the best voices in country music, even if much of her material sounds more like power-chord-laden 'classic rock' than the twangy tunes to which she once paid allegiance.
And McBride certainly looked the part of a rocker, wearing a strategically shredded black, silver and stilettos ensemble that she could have borrowed from Pat Benatar. Striding about a stage as large as what remained of the main floor at the Xcel, she exuded the air of a rock star. But what could have come off as an artificial persona was swept aside by the pure power of McBride's voice. Her 18-song set was filled with spectacular singing, the emotion she poured out clearly transfixing most of the audience of 5,800.
Among the awe-inspiring performances were a heartbreaking "Walk Away" — delivered while sitting on the lip of the stage — a stirring version of Bill Withers' "Lean on Me" with gospel-flavored vocal ornamentation that would
make Beyonce jealous, and a wrenching take on Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through the Night."
But McBride wasn't the only exceptional musician on stage. Each member of her seven-piece band had an impressive solo turn. The most memorable came when fiddler Jennifer Wrinkle opened "Concrete Angel" with a haunting take on the 19th-century folk tune "Wayfaring Stranger." But she was soon upstaged by McBride, who delivered the ballad while soaring above the audience on an incandescent sliver of blue moon.
If this tour is intended to reassert McBride's status as a major country star, then Saturday's show certainly made her case well. Alas, the same couldn't be said for Adkins. He boasts a rich bass voice that could loosen floorboards, but seemed far more relaxed in the videos that accompanied every number than he did trying to relate with the audience as he ambled about the stage uncomfortably. His ballads were his best efforts, especially the weeper "You're Gonna Miss This."

The Bradley Center is usually tolerant of cameras. I think as long as you don't use the flash, it should be OK. -

It was Great!! our seats were less than 20' from the round platform where she landed with her moon. We were a couple rows off the floor just right(her left) of center. Very happy with seats and when Martina "flew" on the moon to the platform she was like a angel on wings. She sang several songs on the platform and after, she worked her way around the crowd back to the stage. It wasn't a sprint to the stage either, she sang at least a full song during, and hugged or shook hands with her adoring fans all the way back.
Best concert I've been to(if not a bit loud
). Trace was great(I admit previously my wife and I had no idea who he was) but most of his songs were very familiar and were great. What other concert can you go to and hear classic country, Carrie Underwood(Cowboy Casanova), Van Halen and AC/DC among the pre concert songs
Since we had not been to a MM concert before both my wife and I noted the following: Trace was so large and was setup in the first 30? feet of the stage. After they tore down his stage and Martina opened she was in the farrrr back top of her stage behind the band. We could hardly see her and my first thought was how small she looked compared to Trace. To our joy she quickly made her way down to the front of the stage where stayed for the rest of her performance, still small in stature but very powerful in voice!
One great concert
BTW for anyone interested in the running times:
Trace- 1hr followed by 5 minute encore
35 minutes to tear down his stage and set up Martinas.
1hr 20 minute Martina followed by 10 minute encore.
Total show 3hrs 10 minutes (of which was 2hrs 35 minutes of singing).
Very much worth our ticket price, one full night of singing.
re: cameras, while there were signs abound and they even mentioned it on the PA I bet 1 out of 4 people had a camera(including me). I forced my flash off(makes better pictures anyway) but most people didn't
I think unless you bring a big 35mm w/telescoping lens you should be ok. Everybody seemed to be patted down by security but I guess the didn't feel my camera on my belt(could seem like a cell phone which many people were using for photos). -

This show sounds so amazing on Martina's part! I can't wait to see it! That sucks, though, what they said about Trace! I've never seen him live, and I'm really don't know his material, but hopefully he'll pick up the pace and step up his game if this journalist's report was accurate!

I thought Trace did an awesome job,but was dissapointed that he never sang Arlington. He could have sang that last instead of the awful song he sang at the very end.Martina was awesome, altough she sounded different, not sure if it was the sound system or what it was. I truly thought this tour would have sold the Xcel out,but it didn't even sell half the center. You can truly tell how hard the times are for people. Although TM had seats available for $10 that were way up in the bleachers. It was a very good concert!

I loved this show. It was one of the best that I have seen. Especially from front row! I love Martina's new hair cut and her outfit was awesome! It was a GREAT night. My only disappointment was that the meet n greet was so quick and they only allowed one picture and the picture I got taken with Martina didn't turn out so good, of me that is. Oh well, it is still cool that I actually have a picture with her! Thanks Martina!

Camera's can be a beast during a M&G. Did you get some pics from the first row? -

RE: St. Paul Concert Review
I took my best friend to this concert with me. It was the very first Martina concert she has ever been to. She knows I love Martina but I don't think she really understood why until last night. Half way through the concert she turned to me and told me that she would be going to any other Martina concerts that I am going to be going to. She even mentioned going to other states to do it. I think she is hooked for life. Another enlightened one. Though there really wasn't any doubt in my mind that she wouldn't be after seeing her live.
I personally loved the concert. It has to be one of the best that I have gone to. I think Martina is like fine wine...She just gets better with age. -

Martina is not but an inspiration to women, young and old. She was amazing last night!! She is so positive and uplifiting. Many singers these days sing about how hard things are and other depressing issues. Martina helps women to be and become self confident! I listen to her music to lift my spirits! I thought Trace was amazing as well!! Great concert! God Bless!

RE: St. Paul Concert Review
I saw Trace in August at our county fair...he awesome as usual but he also didn't "Arlington" at that concert either, or his newest single. As bummed as I was that he wasn't with her in Moline, I am glad I got to see him in August. Glad you all had fun!

RE: St. Paul Concert Review
I thought Martina and her band were magnificent. The energy and enthusiasm displayed throughout the concert was uplifting. Martina sang with a strength and passion that is quite unique to her. Nice touch to greet the fans within the arena and sing a few up close for those more distant from the stage. I thought Trace Adkins put on a good show, as well. Excellent concert.

RE: St. Paul Concert Review
I agree with everyone and thought the concert was absolutely AMAZING!!! I can't stop thinking about it and I had such a good time!! I had an awesome view from the fourth row and she totally rocked the house!!! Unbelievable...and I am so glad that Trace acknowleged that no matter what the CMA's say, Martina will always be the female vocalist!!! :)

RE: St. Paul Concert Review
I thoroughly enjoyed the concert..it was amazing!!!
Just wanted to chime in on Trace..I thought he did a great job and I wish he had sung Arlington and a few others that are my favorites but overall I thought he did a good job and I didn't think he was bad like that one review said....he got the crowd going for Martina and his fans (the ones that were wearing his shirts) sure seemed to be enjoying themselves!!!
Also I too loved how he said Martina was the female vocalist and then I loved it when he said "he should have used his outside voice but he doesn't give a sh*t"....everyone loves Martina!!!

RE: St. Paul Concert Review
I loved this show as well. I've been to many Martina concerts over the years and I believe this might have been the best one!!! Her vocals were amazing and I loved when she flew over the crowd and then sang a few songs from the middle of the arena. I thought I'm Trying was done beautifully and thouroughly enjoyed the entire show. She never disappoints.
