McBride shines in first night of concert tour
David Burke | Posted: Friday, November 20, 2009 11:45 pm
The mutual love affair between Martina McBride and the Quad-Cities continued and grew stronger Friday night at the i wireless Center in Moline.
In her sixth appearance in the Quad-Cities this decade, the 43-year-old singer kicked off her "Shine All Night" tour in front of 6,000-plus energetic fans.
"The first night is the most special night," she told fans early in the 90-minute show. "You never know what's going to happen.
"I chose this place because I know I'm safe with you guys."
(She co-headlines the tour, stretching into next spring, with Trace Adkins beginning tonight in the Twin Cities.)
With enough bells and whistles to match her peerless voice, she entered to a screen with projections of clapping hands, while a disco ball and voluminous fog machine helped bring on her seven-member band, kicking off with "Ride," the first single from her most recent album, "Shine."
McBride performed several songs from the new album, including its current hit, "I Just Call You Mine."
Several unexpected moments dotted the show, including a soulful organ solo that led into an impassioned cover of "Lean on Me," a rollicking, conga drum-led version of Sheryl Crow's "Every Day is a Winding Road" in the beginning of the encore, her own "Concrete Angel," where she rode seated in a neon blue and white crescent moon across the arena, to a rotating stage in the back of the arena.
"Now you all can say you've been mooned by Martina McBride," she cracked.
She returned to the main stage through the crowd, reaching out to as many fans as possible during her hit "This One's For the Girls."
Extremely warm responses from the audience to songs such as "Broken Wing" and "Where Would You Be" visibly shook the singer.
"You guys are like family to me," she said to the audience. "You're like my second home."
Country star Blake Shelton appeared before McBride, with a cadre of hits including "Some Beach," "Ol' Red" and his cover of Michael Buble's "Home." The affable singer explained to the audience that some of them "don't know who I am," and earnestly said he was going to sing a song that would explain who he was - before breaking into the jingle of the FreeCreditReport.com TV commercial.
Opening the night was the Lost Trailers, a six-man band discovered by Willie Nelson, whose set included their first hit, "Holler Back."

I'm really glad that the opening night went well, it sounds like this tour is going to be something special. I wish I could catch a show, but I'm quite happy with my Ireland experience so I can't complain.

The new show is absolutely mind blowing!! It was my 50th Martina concert and I think it could be the best one ever. If it comes to location near you...go!!! you won't be disappointed. It has new stage, set list, very physical for Martina. Loved the acoustic set. Martina floats over the crowd with the crescent moon. Very visual. Her voice is as amazing as ever. The review was correct when it said Martina shined!! Opening acts of The Trailers, and can't help but love Blake Shelton were also very good

It seems one hell of a show and seems like Martina is making a point with this tour. I hope it's released on DVD because if she ever comes to the UK again,I doubt we'll be able to see this kinda show..
