Hurricane Earl

Wed, Sep 1, 2010 at 6:15 PM

Who's being affected out there in Martinaville?

It will reach us[Atlantic Canada] they say Saturday, most likely won't be a hurricane but just a tropical disturbance.

Anyway, stay safe!

It upgraded back up to a category 4 now they say it could be a category 1 when it hits us. Which it is suppose to hit directly on. Don't think our little Island could stand a big hit so hopefully it down grades again!

Again those on the east coast stay safe!!

Cat 1's are nothing to mess around with. You still must prepare, esp. for the inconvience of potential powwer outages. each storm has it's own personality and every geographical area has different topgraphy that can affect damage. Fl. soil can take a lot more rain than the north, we laugh when we hear NYC being crippled with 4 inches of rain. Our palm trees can take a lot of wind. Bottom line, lots of rain can be a real problem anywhere, please be prepared!

Billy, what are the local tv stations telling your area? I don't know much about your area of NC.

Billy, Get the heck off this site and at least look at your local stations web site for info! You need to get cracking and you need the right info to prepare. Things can chage quickly, you simply must keep abreast of the most recent advisories. You want to chat and post with us in between advisories and taking a break from the preps, fine.

Thumbs up anyone? Billy, you need to heed the above advise!

    My Hurricane Tips

I highly recommend the use of two coolers when the power fails. Use one as the ONE that is going to be opened frequently with the drinks, items to be used first, etc. I kept the other cooler seperate (under my dining table) and tied a sheet around the center to remind others not to open it.

Want to keep that fridge door closed!? Most of us know not to open the fridge in a power outage. Count on everyone forgetting this! Tie belts, scarves, what ever around the door handles to remind everyone. Don't have handles on the doors? Turning the fridge sideways or placing a chair with a garbage can atop to block the entry also works well.

Don't take any chances with food safety. When in doubt, throw it out The #1 cause of food poisoning is food stored at improper temp's. The danger zone is 41-140 degrees F. Bacteria doubles every 20 minutes It's possible for the #s to reach in the miilions in a matter of hours, esp.(but not limited) to raw proteins. It's all a #s game and you just don't know the # that you are starting with.
"Stomach flu" is a myth. Those symptoms are likely to be food poisoning.

If you need additional safe storage to secure your items, consider the use of a dishwaher, washer or dryer. The dishwasher is water tight and very sturdy, as well the the newer high efficiency washers. Regular washer and dryers have a very sturdy casing and the needed height to help protect from wind and water damage.

I have seen countless homes with the whole roof and supprting structures down, but the above items remain intact.

Hope this helps. I'm am praying for everyone, I really am

I have Heeded the above Advise!! I just checked my local weather, so far they are saying it's 294 mils. from Wilimington N,C. and should come close the coast tomorrow Night! But if I heard them right, it will only brush the coast, the radar showed the rainbands and they don't even cover our area! But I have been to the store to stock up just in case! because these things as we all know can turn on a dime!

Hugo was Sept 1989. We do not need that again. I live in SC. I was just starting first grade. I have very clear memories of that storm. It is funny now, but I went to bed in my room that night. When my dad woke me I was in the hall. He woke me to show me the eye of the storm. I didnt understand at the time what I was looking at. I remember being upset because my swing set was a twisted mess. The important thing in the mind of a first grader was my swing set. lol

It's when people don't prepare that it always hits the hardest, we got hit a few years ago pretty good by Juan & then that winter we had what they called "White Juan" a major blizzard that pretty much did the same as Hurricane Juan except with snow added into the mix!

Well, I live in Illinois, but I'm worried about my grandma, who lives on the east coast, so just keep her in your prayers.
